Paxton Railroad Prairie

  • High quality original prairie as well as several wetlands.

  • This active railroad right-of-way is a tiny remnant of the tallgrass prairie that once covered east-central Illinois.

  • Prairie cicadas, a unique prairie species, can be heard singing here in the summer.

This section of active railroad right-of-way contains a patch of high quality prairie as well as several wetlands. In 1991, Grand Prairie Friends purchased a garden/beautification lease for a 600 foot length of the right-of-way which gives GPF the right to management, and provides some protection from disturbance.

North on US 45 from Urbana for 25 mi.  Approximately 1 mi south of Paxton, there is an overhanging telephone wire.  About 500 ft north on the left is the prairie.  Park on roadside.
